In chapters on the “boring parts” of Moby-Dick, the scandals that dogged the painter Thomas Eakins, the role of women in Andy Warhol's Factory films, “bad sex” and Tracey Emin's crudely evocative line drawings, and L.A. artist Vaginal Davis's pornographic parodies of Vanessa Beecroft's performances, Sex Objects challenges simplistic readings of sexualized art and instead investigates what such works can tell us about the nature of desire.

In Sex Objects, Doyle offers a creative and original exploration of how and where art and sex connect, arguing that to proclaim a piece of art “about sex” reveals surprisingly little about the work, the artist, or the spectator. Deftly interweaving anecdotal and personal writing with critical, feminist, and queer theory, she reimagines the relationship between sex and art in order to better understand how the two meet-and why it matters.

Jennifer Doyle is associate professor of English at the University of California, Riverside. She is coeditor, with Jonathan Flatley and José Esteban Muñoz, of Pop Out: Queer Warhol.

the many ways sexual desire has been portrayed in art in the past 100 years

You know that any book of criticism with Thomas Eakins, the notorious pornographic film "Moby Dick," Andy Warhol, Vanessa Beecroft, and Tracey Emin in it is going to be quirky. What links all of these quirky artists in this work by an associate professor of English at the U. of California-Riverside and co-author of "Pop Out: Queer Warhol" is their approaches to handling sexuality. With Eakins, the approach in his time and place of Victorian era America was subtle and ambivalent. With Warhol, the approach was ironic and often detached. With Beecroft, forward and multiplicitous. These and the other unconventional treatments of sexuality are critiqued with reference to "the queer theory that addresses the limitations of dominant (largely binary) models for sexual identity for describing our sexual lives and for understanding representations of sexual difference and sexual desire." Doyle demonstrates a sure understanding of the latest methodology and critical possibilities of queer theory.

excellent for academics and non academics

I picked up this book because I met Professor Doyle socially and I am into art. I particularly enjoyed her chapter on Tracey Emin and her introduction, wherein she discusses Moby Dick in decidedly non-academic terms. Most academic prose is like soap without water, but Doyle manages to get a good lather going. Her work is deep but accessible in the best way, not because it's easy, but because it actually makes you think about thinks that matter, and mean something.

About the Author
André Darlington has been writing about the cocktail revolution from a front-row barstool for over a decade. He is a long-time contributor to Madison, WI’s alternative weekly, Isthmus, where he has been an award-winning restaurant critic and cocktail columnist. He is a frequent wine and spirits judge in the U. S. and Europe, and, when he encounters a well-stocked bar, cannot resist getting behind the stick.

Tenaya Darlington is a food writer and educator in Philadelphia. By day, she teaches writing at Saint Joseph’s University; by night she pens the cheese blog Madame Fromage (madamefromageblog.com). Her book, The Di Bruno Bros. House of Cheese, may be the first cheese guide to suggest pairing cheese with cocktails. Her writing has also appeared in Cooking Light, Global Traveler, and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Life Changing and makes a great gift

New addition to my review... This book makes a great gift. I have a few extra copies on hand as a quick grab hostess gift. It's the same price as a bottle of wine but the beautiful pictures, fun snippets of history and great recipes make it far more memorable. It can easily be upsized with a bottle or two of booze or bar supplies.

Now my original review... The New Cocktail Hour is life-changing! There are so many great things about this book, where do I start… Let’s start with the reason I bought this book, the booze! My husband’s idea of a cocktail was pour two finger widths of vodka in a glass. Add Diet Sprite. Toss in some ice. Stir with finger. My go to beverage lived in black box in my fridge. This book is FULL of interesting and delicious cocktails. We are now far more sophisticated when ordering drinks, and hosting guests. We are well on our way to becoming cocktail snobs. I have pulled it out at several dinner parties when a guest has asked about a beverage I am serving. It is an intriguing centerpiece to conversation.
This book is easy to follow, even for a novice. I was a bit intimidated when I first picked it up, because several of the ingredients were unfamiliar. The book has great descriptions and explanations for the less experienced bartender, like, what exactly are bitters.

I also love that food pairings are offered for the drinks. All these years of pairing my boxed wine with food… I am so ashamed of myself.

The most endearing parts of this book are the gorgeous pictures and snippets of history given with each drink and drink era/category. They are very well written, informative, interesting, and often humorous. The Monkey Gland on page 88 is a must read, must try cocktail.
I could list dozens and dozens of other MUST TRY drinks (Sky Juice) and fantastic recipes for more common drinks (the Martini is to die for), but I recommend you buy the book and try them all.

A good book, but not recommended for beginners like me

A good book, but not recommended for beginners like me. I did go to Bartender School about 15 years ago, so I can kind of find what I want. The book is arranged by what was popular for certain time periods, Early Drinks, WWI Cocktails, The Roaring Twenties, and so on. Would have preferred an arrangement by type of Spirt, like: Vodka, Run, Whisky, Gin and so on.

Fun little cocktail book

Love this book - so happy I decided to order it. It's full of a lot of fun information and history on cocktails through the ages and offers a lot of great recipes for all types of drinks for all different occasions. If I had to pick a downside to this book, it's that I wish it included a few more vodka-based drinks but overall it's a great book. Also, the pictures and design of the book are really nice so it's a good book to leave out for display. Overall though this is definitely worth the money.

Kary Mullis was awarded a Nobel Prize for inventing the PCR technique more than 15 years ago in 1993. Since its "discovery", multiple adaptations and variations of the standard PCR technique have been described, with many of these adaptations and variations currently being used in clinical, diagnostic and academic laboratories across the world. Further, these techniques are being applied at the diagnostic level (e.g. as high throughput testing methodologies to detect minimum residual disease, the presence/absence of specific pathogens etc), as well as to increase our understanding of fundamental disease processes.

Frequently, PCR technicians and specialists limit their understanding of PCR to one particular methodology. However, this approach limits their appreciation of the range of versatile PCR techniques currently available, techniques that may be applicable and indeed more suitable to their own laboratory situation.

This manual aims to provide the reader with a guide to the standard PCR technique and its many available modifications, with particular emphasis on the role of PCR techniques in the diagnostic laboratory (the central theme of this manual). Jennifer K. Stuller is a writer and journalist, specializing in gender and sexuality in popular culture. She has been researching and speaking internationally on superwomen for over a decade, and has contributed to such publications as Geek Monthly, Washington CEO and the Encyclopedia of Gender and Society. Stuller also teaches at the University of Washington, her alma mater, and maintains two blogs: Ink-Stained Traveler and Ink-Stained Amazon. She lives in Seattle, Washington.

a MUST HAVE for anyone who loves women superheroes

I am someone who thinks a lot about how comics, television, and movies shape how our culture sees itself and the higher wishes we may have for ourselves. Stuller's book is the something I didn't know I needed until I got it.

This is a great historical social commentary. Chapter one starts with Wonder Woman and places her in her author's original historical context, and then she touches on just about every great (and silly) female super hero from the 1940s to the 2000s. Reading this book made me feel like I was a part of a very big family (a feeling I don't often have as a 30-something year old woman who reads comic books).

After touching on the characters themselves, and how they refelct or inspire the time when they originally appeared, Stuller has an impressive glossary of superwomen with brief biographies,and a recommendation list of books, tv shows, movies, and internet sites to continue your exploration of fantastic women.

Whether you are a man or a woman, whether you were inspired by Emma Peel, Lynda Carter, Buffy Summers, or Xena the Warrior Princess -- you will want this book next to your comic book or DVD collection.

A fantastic introduction to feminist pop culture studies

As I read Ink-Stained Amazons, I found myself relapsing into grad school behaviors. I read with a pen in hand, annotating and underlining constantly. And I found myself wishing that I'd had this book while I was still in school, because Stuller's astute observations about tough women would have worked perfectly in the last paper I wrote, an examination of Zoe and Kaylee from Firefly as feminist heroes. I've even written about Hollywood's version of the tough woman on my blog, and no matter what your stand is on the matter, I think it's important to be aware of the history and the issues at play when Hollywood and the comic book industry creates these superwomen.

Stuller's book serves as an excellent introduction to superwomen throughout entertainment's history, from Wonder Woman's early comic book days to television's relatively recent tough chicks, like Sydney Bristow and Dana Scully. Along with the useful history are a series of chapters about common issues in the portrayal of superwomen: redemption, collaboration, and compassion; superwomen and their fathers; and the maternal, filial, and mentoring relationships between women.

The idea of collaboration between women is of particular interest to me. Most of the male heroes we see are loners, but many of the women work within a team. Female superheroes are often members of teams, but you also have collaboration and female friendship featured prominently in some fandoms such as Xena and Buffy. I wrote about this in my Firefly paper: all four of the women of Serenity depend on each other as well as the male members of the crew as a family unit. As Stuller says, this kind of collaboration is common in the female hero "not because she is incapable of succeeding on her own, but because she is more successful when she recognizes, encourages, and utilizes the talents of others" (92). The crew of Serenity and the Scoobies stick together because they love each other, and they work better as a unit than they would as loners.

The third section of the book, "The Mythmakers," deals not only with female creators of popular culture and modern mythology, but also with fans stepping up and demanding better portrayals of women, such as the creation of Project Girl Wonder and Gail Simone's "Women in Refrigerators" observations.

This is a wonderful book if you're looking to dive into analysis of female characters in pop culture. I'm actually thinking about expanding my Firefly paper thanks to Stuller's fantastic book, though I haven't the foggiest idea what I'd do with it, heh.

Excellent book about the evolution of the superpower female hero

Ink-Stained Amazons and Cinematic Warriors: Superwomen in Modern Mythology is about heroic women characters in modern media (1940's to today) and what their stories say about our society and most importantly how our society views the roles of women and their potential. The book is very accessible and easy to read, even if you aren't familiar with every movie, show, comic book, or novel which Stuller references. (There's an appendix filled with footnotes and notes on characters and the author's own recommended reading and viewing.) It's definitely a geeky book as Stuller is very excited to share with you, the reader, about the media and super-powered women she loves.

But at the same time, Stuller is very much an academic feminist, who chooses instead of harshly critiquing the flaws in the media she discusses to celebrate the strengths and the good points. This is not a bad view to have. It is just different than my own; and at many times in my reading, I wanted to say, "But!" (I can love Buffy: the Vampire Slayer without particularly loving Joss Whedon, for instance.) That said, I still enjoyed her viewpoint, and I do cherish many of the texts she discusses despite their flaws.

In Section I, Ink-Stained Amazons and Cinematic Warriors flows really nicely from one topic to the next, in both a chronological and evolutionary development of the woman hero. I absolutely agree that most of our modern superwoman mythology is thanks to Wonder Woman and those hard-working, ever iconic Rose the Riveters of WWII. Stuller does a great job at addressing the political climates of the different eras and the resulting heroines without passing judgments.

In Section II, Stuller covers what she calls the 'Journey of the Female Hero.' But I would rather say it's actually about the hero's family-structure as Stuller digs into how women heroes gain strength from those around them, e.g. Buffy and the Scoobies and Xena and her relationship with Gabrielle.

I particularly enjoyed the chapter about mothers. Mostly because I love texts where women characters have good and inspiring relationships with their mothers. And I do agree with Stuller that good mother-daughter relationships in heroics could use a few more texts.

In Section III, Stuller discusses current myth making by women creators and the question of where these texts are evolving too. This section was the least organized, and Stuller seemed to drift from topic-to-topic in a way that she previously did not. She also seemed to go back to some topics she'd already discussed, particularly journeys of heroic women and their mothers. And I can somewhat empathize with the task of trying to write history as it happens and not having the distance. I hope that Stuller can update this book as our female heroes grow.

Overall, as a pop culture fan, I enjoyed Ink-Stained Amazons and Cinematic Warriors and would recommend it to anyone interested in how heroic women are portrayed in pop culture. This book would also make a great companion reader to a class about heroic women. I'm also happy that I got a few recommendations of texts to try myself that I hadn't heard of like the British spy Modesty Blaise.

great pictorial book with good comments

For people who love to see great pictures about the Chernobyl tragedy this book is a blessing. Form day one Igor took pictures and continued to do so. This book will give you a view form the disaster and its impact. All condensed in one book. Not only are the pictures of great quality, but pictures are also accompanied with good comments that put the pictures in the right perspective.
Highly recommended for picture lovers and people who are interested in the Chernobyl disaster and its impact on the environment and peoples lives.

Great collection of Pictures and Personal Experience

I was surprised by the amount of photographs, but was definitely not disappointed. Many of these photos are iconic to the Chernobyl disaster so you may have seen them before. This book tells the story of the Chernobyl disaster through the eyes of Igor Kostin and his photos. There are a few possible typos, but overall its an excellent book and I am glad to have it in my collection.

Enjoyed the book

This book is good for someone who likes 50% photos and 50% texts. I really enjoyed it and got the true sense of the devastation of how Chernobyl changed everything. I've always been fascinated with Chernobyl but to have it in pictures is powerful. I soon found a BBC docu-drama similar to the story in the book. Made me interested in more specific details of this time in history.

About the Author

A sewer and a knitter since she was eight years old, Eileen Wright has always worked creatively with needles and threads of some kind, working her way through most needlecraft hobbies over the years. She feels indebted to her maternal grandmother, Cynthia Rassmussen, for passing on her talents and love of being creative.

Vancouver Island in Canada has been Eileen's spiritual home since her very first visit, and she feels fortunate to have been able to live there for almost 20 years. She fills her days with designing and creating quilts.

Eileen shares her condo with three Pfaff sewing machines, a huge fabric stash, and some green growing plants--all of which provide her with all the serenity she craves. Huge skylights allow the sun to shine on her workspace, and an ever-changing view of the ocean and distant mountains often inspires various quilting projects.

Very Clear Directions for a Beginner Quilter

I just started quilting earlier this year. Recently I discovered the bargello quilting design and have been very intrigued by them. However I am not yet confident enough to make a quilt without a pattern and instructions. Although the bargello quilts look very complicated, everyone assures me they are not, so I started looking for instruction books/patterns and selected this one. Having just read through it cover to cover, I feel I understand the process and am ready to give one a try! This book has very thorough instructions for selecting fabrics, making the strips and cross-cutting. It also has a very detailed design chart for each of the featured quilt patterns that clearly shows the width for each cutting strip with the color numbers. Kind of like paint by number with fabrics! I am very pleased with this book, and recommend it to anyone contemplating making a bargello quilt.

This is a workbook for me.

This is not a book that just gathers dust on my bookshelf. I have made two quilts from it and will probably make more. She made the directions very easy to follow and I was pleased with my success. I personally would not like to try these projects if I was new to a sewing machine because on the wall quilts, there are some pretty small pieces. Of course, these tiny pieces give lovely detail you can be proud of. I would call it intermediate skill level. I have her latest book as well, and look forward to seeing what new designs she brings to us in the future.

It was just Ok for me.

I'm bored with Ben myself. I think he was thoughtless & selfish for what he did to Dahlia & his family. This was kinda a pity party for Ben trying to get back to where he once was & wanted to be. Hoping Frayed will finally put this to rest w/S'Belle. But now he's playing with fire again.

I love, love, love Kim Karr's Connections Series. River Wilde is to die for in Connected and Torn. Then there was Jagger in Dazed......swoon......next we got to read Xander Wilde's story in Mended.....and oh how I loved Xander, but...the one guy I was never crazy about was Ben Covington. Now you'll have to read the story to understand who Ben is, what role he plays, and what he does and has done. Well, Blurred has totally changed my mind about Ben. I loved the way Kim Karr gives her readers insight into Ben's side of the story....and well, Ben is definitely a hottie. He's pretty much hit rock bottom in this novella, but things begin to look up and I cannot wait to read more of his story in Frayed. Now while all the hot guys in this series are just "YUMMY," they wouldn't be who they are without their leading ladies, all of which I loved and rooted for, and could more than hold their own against these Wilde men.
Romance that is sizzling hot, guys that will melt your panties right off of you, and stories that keep you captivated from beginning to end.......The Connection Series by Kim Karr has it all. Check it out. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Ben Covington had it all and then lost it. One decision changed his life. He faked his death and left everything behind to keep his fiancé safe from a drug cartel. I’m sure you know the story if you have read the other books in the Connected series. If you are reading this review, you are probably curious to see if it’s worth it to pick up this novella…my answer is YES!

In Blurred, we finally get to learn Ben’s backstory as well his thoughts on the aftermath that ensued when he came back from the dead. Ben’s life turned into a blur, and this novella gives us Ben’s story through his eyes. His poor choices caused some gut-wrenching emotional damage for others, but now we get to see the real Ben. I always wondered what Ben was thinking and feeling…was he just a cheater frat boy just trying to catapult his career or was there something more?

“I don’t even know who I am anymore. I’m alone and left to pick up the pieces to a life I don’t have. Rock bottom. It’s a phrase I never thought I’d use to describe myself, but it’s the only one that fits.”

Ben is such an important character in this series, and he deserved his own POV book. Blurred doesn’t regurgitate the other books via his POV…but provides the insight into his decisions that affected every character in this series.

I was lucky to receive and read Frayed (Connections #4). I am not going to spoil anything here, but I will say to Connections fans…that you want to read Blurred. Frayed picks up where Blurred left off. Once again Kim is going to take you on an emotional road trip and you will get to see how everyone is this series is Connected…Get ready for Kim Karr blow you away with this one.

Mankin Mak is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he has taught and researched on atmospheric dynamics for many years. He was born in Hong Kong, where he completed his high school education, before moving on to undergraduate study in engineering physics at the University of Toronto, Canada, and graduate study in meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He has published extensively in various international journals of atmospheric sciences and has served as an editor of the Journal of Atmospheric Sciences.

R. Dodge Woodson is a Master Plumber with more than 35 years' experience. He has owned and operated plumbing and construction companies and has served as adjunct faculty at the Central Main Technical College.

rushed and slaped this one together

This Guide has so many mistakes in it, it suprises me that the proof reader was from a major publisher. The priciples are good
but the answers to the questions are in part not correct, especially the answer keys. I think I would pass as the only way you will get anything out of this book is to find the answer key ansewers and circle them, and then you study the answers and the questions.

Caution: be sure that the answer key answers are correct, found quite a few rediculous mistakes.

Seemed that many of the questions were repetitive and, in some cases, had conflicting answers. Maybe that's how the tests are...
