About the Author
Rick Billstein is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Montana. He has worked in mathematics teacher education at this university for 40 years and his current research is in the areas of curriculum development and mathematics teacher education. He teaches courses for future teachers in the Mathematics Department and also is the site director for the "Show-Me Project," an NSF-funded project supporting the dissemination and implementation of standards-based middle grades mathematics curricula. He worked on an NSF grant called "Tinker Plots" to develop new data analysis software and he serves on the Advisory Boards for several other national projects. From 1992-1997, he directed the NSF-funded "Six Through Eight Mathematics" (STEM) middle school mathematics curriculum project and is now directing the "Middle Grades" MATH"Thematics Phase II Project. "Dr. Billstein has co-authored 24 books, including eight editions of" A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary Teachers," He typically does about 25 regional and national presentations per year and has traveled to Thailand to work with the international schools there. He has also presented at the International Conferences on Mathematics Education (ICME). Shlomo Libeskind is a professor in the mathematics department at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. He is responsible for the "pre-college" teaching major in the department and has continuously been teaching and advising preservice and inservice teachers. Dr. Libeskind has extensive writing experience (books, articles, and workshop materials) as well as experience in directing mathematics education projects. Libeskind is an active member of Oregon MathematicsCouncil (OMEC) and has been involved in reviewing materials for the state of Oregon's standards for college admission. Johnny W. Lott began his teaching career in the public schools of DeKalb County, Georgia, outside Atlanta. There he taught mathematics in grades 8-12. He also taught one year at the Westminster Schools, grades 9-12, and one year in the Pelican, Alaska, school, grades 6-12. In addition, he has taught in grade schools in Montana while at The University of Montana. Johnny has been co-author of several books and has written numerous articles and other essays in the "Arithmetic Teacher," "Teaching Children Mathematics," "The Mathematics Teacher," "School Science and Mathematics," "Student Math Notes," and "Mathematics Education Dialogues." He has been the Project Manager for the "Figure This!" publications and website developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and was project co-director of the State Systemic Initiative for Montana Mathematics and Science (SIMMS) Project. He has served on many NCTM committees, has been a member of its Board of Directors, and was its president from April 2002-April 2004. In the Department of Mathematical Sciences at The University of Montana, Dr. Lott was a full professor and served as department chair. He is currently the Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University. His doctorate is in mathematics education from Georgia State University.

Not Your Average Monster Book

Jack Duran and his two best friends, Rock and Duff, have been painting houses and saving money, and now they're ready to take a trip around the world. Their first stop is Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the last known location of Jack's wild older brother Dan. Jack's mother has been frantic with worry since she hasn't heard from her eldest son in months, so the three young men spend several weeks scouring Puerto Vallarta for any sign of Dan, with no success. When Jack finally finds a scrap of information, it comes with a warning in the form of "Yanqui go home," carved into his back with a knife. Naturally, instead of heeding the warning, Jack, Rock, and Duff attempt to hire a boat to Punta Perdida, where Jack now believes Dan to be. But no one will take them, calling it a bad place. The guys befriend another trio on a yacht, however. Portly Jamaican Hector Bellocheque is on vacation sailing with two lovely young women, Eva and Candy, and the whole group is soon on their way to the strange village. Bellocheque intrigues the young men with a tale of lost gold on the sea bottom near Punta Perdida, and when a maimed priest in the village gives Jack his missing brother's knapsack and hurries him away, they know that Dan is dead.

One of the items in Dan's knapsack is a notebook filled with his stoned ramblings, diagrams, and a diary of sorts that gives directions to a wreck called the Argonaut lying on the bottom near the village. The group decides to go looking for it, and with the notebook's directions, it is not long before the Argonaut is found. Shortly thereafter, Hector and Candy return from the dive with more gold coins like the one Hector had shown them earlier. Jack and Duff dive next, and Jack discovers five chests full of gold bars. Duff heads back to the surface ahead of Jack, and Jack then sees something so frighteningly huge, he passes out and has to be rescued by the others. They inform him Duff never made it back to the boat.

After Jack witnesses a strange, dark ritual too bizarre to seem real in Punta Perdida, Bellocheque tells them the legend behind the Argonaut and of the giant manta ray that guards the gold, which ties into the antisocial behavior of the villagers. The stakes are high, but the payoff will be great if they can abscond with the Argonaut's gold. There are other dangers, as well as the huge manta, and Jack discovers the seductive lure of gold and the immense risks and depraved depths it will take people to, as well as the high price to pay for its wealth.

Though it starred one heck of a scary monster and had its share of action, this was far more than a mere monster book. Angsten has a wry and entertaining way of turning a phrase, and Jack Duran experiences more than greed, lust, and fear while he finds his soul turned inside out by Punta Perdida, the Argonaut, and the legendary Diablo Blanco, the immense manta ray. Though some aspects of the story unfolded as predicted, there were enough unexpected twists to keep me guessing. David Angsten has a new fan.

Could have taken all the marbles for the year, but slips at the end

"Jaws" had it's Great White. "The Deep" had it's Moray, and now, "Dark Gold" has it's giant supernatural...what?

Of course, the cover ruins the secret; it's a giant manta ray.

What is wrong with this publisher? Angsten's devilfish doesn't show up until very late in the story, and is never actually seen clearly by a character. The story would be much scarier without the cover image. I know, cause I read the book on my Kindle. I didn't know what the thing was, and there was no cover image to tip me off.

Dark Gold starts out like a house afire as recent grad Jack Duran and two buddies set out to find Jack's older brother, who hasn't been heard from since he sent a postcard from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Jack's search leads him to - what could be scarier than a biker bar deep in Mexico at night - where he first hears the words "Punta Perdida," and then has to fight his way out of the place before he can take the next step.

Arriving at Punta Perdida, the bumbling detectives find the natives sullen and uncommnicative, but Jack is able to establish that his brother has been there. Enter rich Bahamian Leopold Bellocheque and his ravishing all girl crew aboard his fabulous sailing yacht and you have the full set of ingredients for intrigue. It turns out there might be a gold rush era shipwreck - enough gold to make the Atocha look like a garbage scow - and close, very close. Why hasn't the wreck been looted long ago? Duh! It's the same reason the natives burn ritual fires on the beach and make sacrifices that are bloody and violent and might even be human: there's something SCARY out there.

Unfortunately, as so often happens when an author attempts to introduce elements of the supernatural late in a story, a kind of "haze" develops, the plot begins to blur and ultimately loses focus. You might call it the rush of events. I call it an author who hasn't quite fully developed his ability to quide the reader's experience. It happens here. The logic isn't good enough and I wasn't sold. And sadly, the author also passes on opportunities to develop the characters, particularly the supporting actors, into well-rounded likeable people, choosing instead to keep the action moving at all costs - and we find ourselves witnessing developments that make little sense and which we don't care about all that much one way or the other.

Dark Gold is still plenty scary - if you've ever been underwater and behind your back something has started to eat your friends, you know what I mean - and the claustrophobic scenes inside the treasure ship are vivid and incredibly tense. All this is helped by the author's polished prose and application of suspense. Given all its successes, the story simply asks the reader to bend disbelief a shade too far, and as we all know, when it snaps, it's gone and cannot be retrieved.

Could have taken all the marbles, but didn't.

An OK read but the author couldn't seem to decide whether this was a straight adventure, treasure story or a science fiction, mutant monster story. A carnivorous Manta Ray guarding a sunken treasure and supported by a human sacrificing death cult on land...? It was a little hard to buy into it all.

An excellent text for a new-comer in telecommunications.

Fundamentals of Telecommunications was written for the layman just starting out in the field of telecommunications. The level of writing is comparatively low. The mathematical and electrical relationships are such that readers with nearly no math or science backgrounds should feel at home. For those who believe that they need a refresher in high school science will find a mini-refresher course in the appendices.
Fundamentals of Telecommunications starts with introductory concepts such as "connectivity," direct and tandem routes and topologies. The second chapter uses electrical telegraph to teach the reader how electrical signals convey intelligence. This introduces, in a very elementary fashion, digital transmission and what the bit is. As the reader proceeds, concepts are built upon and new ideas are introduced such as quality of service and signal impairments, thus to switching, traffic and transmission. Thence the books moves into voice telephony and how digital networks work, data communications and satellites.
I have brought to this book over 20 years of giving telecommunication seminars at the University of Wisconsin, George Washington University, Arizona State University and the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (in Spanish) among others. At one seminar, I was asked: "What's resistance?" A response to this question may be found in Appendix I.

Disappointing

My impression from reading this book is that it was written by an old analog telephone engineer. The book covers so many topics that are just not used any more, for example, frequency division multiplexing of analog voice channels. While some of this stuff is interesting from a historical point of view, it's really useless information for anyone who's interested in how the network works today.

Additionally, the book's primary focus is on voice: how it's transmitted, what the signaling is to set up and tear down calls, traffic engineering, design of local loops, etc.

It's also dated. He occasionally talks about a technology that's "coming" and that technology is already old technology in the network today. On page 219, he writes, "It should be noted that by the year 2000, we can expect to see several low earth-orbit (LEO) satellite systems in operation" so it's obvious that some of the material was written a LONG time ago and never updated.

Finally, the book has many editing errors, including errors in some of the equations. For example, on page 622 (top of the page) there's an equation which has an equal sign where it should be a plus sign. I tried to contact the author to see if there's an errata web page so that these editing errors could be corrected manually but haven't been able to contact him.

That's not to say that the book doesn't have value. There's some good information in the book if your primary interest is traditional voice telephony and you can plow through all the historical information. If your interest is more in data communications, and perhaps VOIP for voice, you might do better to seek out another book.

This book is completely accurate, thorough, and readable. I keep it on my desk as a reference, and find it invaluable. I know the price is steep, but it's worth it!

A very good murder mystery

James Hadley Chase was London-born children's encyclopedia salesman and book wholesaler. He was inspired by American crime writers and wrote his first book "No Orchids for Miss Blandish" which was published in 1939 and still claimed to be one of the best selling mysteries ever published. He published some 80 books and a number of his books were attacked for their violence.

"You're Lonely When You're Dead" builds a mystery of a series of murder which is finally broken down by an intelligent detective. The story is woven around a millionaire's wife who is suspected of kleptomania. It begins one sunny morning around 11'o clock in mid-March. Mr. Vic Malloy, head of Universal Services, goes to meet a millionaire, Mr. Jay Franklin Cerf, who hires him to watch his wife, Anita Cerf, whom he suspects of kleptomania. Malloy appoints one of his operator, Dana Lewis, for the job but she was found dead after a few days of work. The millionaire's wife also vanishes. As Universal services guaranteed secrecy, Malloy had to beat the cops to the murderer.

The novel introduces us to a number of characters. Natalia Cerf, Cerf's daughter, who is in a wheel chair after meeting with an accident, Ceaser Mills, the millionaire's guard, who was a boxer and then disappeared suddenly, Brandon who is captain and Mufflin who is a cop. The Malloy's operators are Dana Lewis, Jack Kerman, Paula Bensinger and Ed Benny. The author introduces one more gorgeous lady, Miss Gail Bolus, who was the only person helping and swore she was just going along for the ride.

At the centre of the Chase's novel is Anita Cerf who disappears after the Dana's murder. When Cerf threatens to sue Malloy if he goes to the police, Malloy decided to play a lone hand find the killer. He was caught up in a series of ruthless murders and macabre situations that succeed each other with the punch and at the speed of a rivet gun. All the leads he got were found dead before he reached there.

Chase has a unique style on which his explanation of the situations and plot development makes the reader create original thought feel himself in that situation. Due to in depth description, an inexperienced reader may find himself too lost in his description and loose the storyline in the process. The narrator always distances himself from any and all characters, yet reveals the thoughts, feelings and emotions of each of them through the course of the novel.

Chase's masterpiece has such lucid characters and precise attention to emotional details to construct a clever plot that is both witty and thought provoking. In addition to its specifically literary virtues, it is a wonderfully edgy thriller.

Hard boiled but second string

This book is the ultimate in cliched hard boiled crime. The story is not too bad if you can forgive the dated attitudes to women and race, and the at times gratuitous violence. The numerous fight scenes read like correography for a Rocky movie, with each blow described in detail. While the story is set on the west coast of the US the author is obviously not American, while he uses the typical lingo of the genre, some common terms are British rather than US and this can be jarring. The writing is generally cliched preventing the book being a good example of the hard boiled crime genre.

Just what I needed!

I was kind of hesitant to whether or not I should get this book. School had already started and I needed it for my nex class. The book arrived the same week I ordered it, right on time for my nex class. The fact that is a rental is great! I will not be needing this book in the future and I usually donate them; but if someone else can benefit from it like I did, it's all a plus. The condition of the book was great; when I read "rental" and "used" I thought it would be all highlighted, but it wasn't! Way to go Amazon...!

It was okay, but nothing worth buying.

This book is okay and does a solid job at explaining the concepts. However, when it comes to the formulas and doing the math as examples to learn from it falls very short. The algebra has steps missing from it and I am willing to bet most of your economics professors will use a derivation form what it is the book. I would only buy as text book not as a reference.

I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework

We had several up-ending events in our family life this past year, and this financial guide from Jonathan Clements has been a godsend as we navigated the financial decisions involved. I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework. When I have a specific, urgent question, I can quickly get to the topic I need because of the way the book is organized by theme and sub-topics. In this regard, it differs from all other financial guidebooks I've read. But most important of all, to me, is that the author kept his familiar personal style (I subscribed to the WSJ for two decades mainly to be able to read Clements' weekly WSJ column). My favorite, favorite part of this book is the bit where, after explaining the logic of the advice given on a topic, Clements then includes a personal section on what he actually, in his real life, has done on the matter. Having followed this author's financial writings since the early 1990s, I can tell you that whenever I have diligently and patiently followed his lead, the results have been rewarding. And whenever I have given in to my emotional worries, and deviated from his clear logic, I've come to regret it. The other aspect of this book that is extremely helpful is the detailed teaching of complicated topics in a way that allows all of us regular people out here to truly understand the fundamentals that we have to grasp if we want to successfully manage our finances.

Easy amazing read for everybody. The sooner the better; this book has it all.

Wow, talk about an easy read. Mr. Clements really broke down the world of finances' into many different areas and keeps his explanations short and to the point. He even lets you know when a part of the book will have some boring math formulas so you can skim it if it's too much for you. Anyway the main reason for the purchase of this book was to find out about social security, its new rule and when the best time to start drawing for my wife and me. This book gave many examples and on top of that gave a website that you can go to and with little information about your age and current income will tell you how much you will draw if you choose to draw at different ages. Yes, other sites do this but none of them factored in the best time for a lower earning spouse to draw on the higher earning spouses account. the site even calculated the difference you will make by drawing at different ages. Another great point for me was his advice on how to "Rebalance" my TSP. I did this and within 5 days earned over $5,000.00. My account balance has been rising daily. This book covers almost everything and the best part is that it is done in very short sections that gets the reader attention quickly and keeps it for the entire section. He even starts out by telling you how to navigate the book. There are many referrals to different companies and websites for further information. I was able to come up with several categories I was interested in and made a list of different websites to go to for more info or to possibly purchase financial products. I would recommend this book to everyone, trust me it covers anything you can think of when it comes to finances. I'm giving one to my 17 year old granddaughter. A Practical Financial Guru has Reappeared

I followed Jonathan Clements for many years through his Wall St. Journal (WSJ) column. In my opinion he had the clear straightforward answers to everyday financial questions that everyone encounters. I lost a compass for my financial life when he left the WSJ and I was so happy to see that he has reappeared with his Money Guide series. Now I have a single reference guide to pull off of my shelf when I have a question about a financial issue. This is far more effective than trying to locate the appropriate yellowing WSJ clipping that I have kept on file over the years.

How much do I treasure Mr. Clements' advice? Well, my son graduated from college last spring and he now has enough money to make his first stock investment. He conferred with me over the past few days about how to go about making the best decision. Once we had talked through what he should do and he had made a decision he placed a trading order. He then asked me whether I could recommend a book that he could consult to get further advice. I pulled my copy of "Money Guide 2016" from my desk, held it up to my video conference camera, and told him that I would order a copy for him as soon as we finished our video conference. I did.

As you might have guessed, my investing advice was heavily influenced by years of following the insights and recommendations of Jonathan Clements. I recommend that you avail yourself of his knowledge as well.

No Elric, but still some great stuff!

For some reason issues #14 and 15 of Conan The Barbarian are omitted from this volume - my guess is for stylistic reasons - but this is yet another wonderful collection of these graphic Hyborean classics.
Like the first volume, the digital recoloring is absolutely gorgeous and renders the breathtaking artwork with stunning clarity. The original comics were printed on newsprint, which as most comic coinnoseurs know, does not render the images with the utmost fidelity. These volumes give these stories the treatment they deserve, with good white paper and care taken in the art restoration.
In the afterword, Roy Thomas (the writer who adapted Conan into comics) promises that issues #14 and #15 will be in volume three, so fear not at the omission of the stories featuring Michael Moorcock's Elric. Simply read and savor the golden age of the comic-book Conan.

When Conan Came To Corinthia...

For Conan traveling along mountainous Corinthia along the Road of Kings, life stunk. Fortunes would be lost, betrayals endured, and eternity glimpsed in the mad embrace of a homicidal gorilla. Conan had his complaints; not so fans of the Conan Marvel comic books.

This second volume of the "Chronicles Of Conan" series, collecting issues published in 1971-72, finds Conan writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith at an early zenith. Gone are the cruder line drawings and sillier prose of the issues collected in Volume 1. Here you get some terrific, visceral excitement with engaging back stories dripping with political intrigue and characters worth remembering for more than the way they stomached a Cimmerian scimitar, like Murilo the deceptively tough-nosed fop, Jenna the deceiver, and Burgun the noble thief.

All three show up for the three-part adaptation of Conan creator Robert E. Howard's "Rogues In The House", a stand out of the entire comic series for its weaving of diverse storylines both sordid and surreal. You see from reading this and Vol. 1 how well Thomas set things up, introducing Jenna and Burgun in earlier issues in such a way "Rogues" reads like a continuation of Conan's busy life, not a detached episode as Howard wrote it. Thomas even finds a way to flesh out a single paragraph of Howard's "Rogues" to fill an entire issue, showcasing his deep-drilling imagination for not the last time.

As "Rogues" develops, Conan is pressed by Murilo to help him kill a mysterious priest who lives, like so many Conan villains, in a vast fortress dwelling barbed with deadly traps. Howard gave this story a lot of strange twists that exposes much about the skullduggery of both the priest and Murilo, who observes Conan, a mere thief, is the "most honest" of the three.

An abruptly-scripted conclusion (which appears the same way in the Howard original) and Windsor-Smith's occasional difficulty at penciling faces are but the most minor speed bumps in this white-knuckle adrenalin ride.

The rest of the book is not nearly as good, the nadir being another Howard adaptation, "The Frost Giant's Daughter", which involves Conan chasing a laughing woman through the snows, hoping to catch and rape her. Yucky, yes, but it could have been transgressively interesting if it wasn't so threadbare, and disconnected from everything else here, being the only story set far from Corinthia. The digitalized color work of this recent publication only makes matters worse, cementing the piece's awkward reality.

Of the other stories, "Garden Of Fear", "Dweller In The Dark", and "Web Of The Spider-God" make arresting use of diversely exotic locales within the greater Corinthian area, but also suffer from the series' Achilles heel: Throwing a random monster into the action whenever a big finish was needed. You still get two strong tales, and a third ("Dweller") which is something more, casting Conan as the kept man of a haughty queen, but the predictability grates, and would grate more over time.

The word "great" seems more apt here, though, especially with the sublime handling of "Rogues Of The House", which showcases how cleverly Thomas and Windsor-Smith could mesh adult sensibilities in a kid's medium. Howard's original stories were nearly 40 years old when they got the Marvel treatment; now it's nearly 40 years later and the Conan comics seem just as enduring.

About the Author
Edogawa Rampo (Hirai Taro, 1894-1965) is widely regarded as the father of Japanese mystery writing. Born in Mie Prefecture, he graduated in 1916 from Waseda University and took on a series of odd jobs, working as an accountant, clerk, salesman, and peddler of noodles from a cart, before discovering his vocation as a writer. The first modern writer of mysteries in Japan, and long-time president of the Japan Mystery Writers' Club, Rampo derived his pen name from the Japanese pronunciation of Edgar Allan Poe, under whose spell he fell early in his career.

Dr. Patricia Welch is an Associate Professor of Japanese and Comparative Literature in the Department of Comparative Literature at Hofstra University.

Japanese Wierd Tales

I can think of few more truly disturbing stories than Edogawa Rampo's "The Chair." A psychologically fable describing in minute detail how a master furniture maker, obsessed with an unachievable woman, creates a chair with himself hidden inside. This chair is given to the woman, and each time she sits in it she nestles unknowingly in his lap, puts her weight onto him, lays her head against his face. The furniture maker silently feels her every night, without her ever knowing. The atmosphere, the detail of the language, and the sheer nature of the story combine for one of the classics of this genre.

"The Chair" is of course included in "Japanese Tales of Mystery & Imagination," a compilation by the father of Japanese mystery writing. Much is made of his adopting the Japanese pronunciation of Edgar Allan Poe as his pen name, but Rampo's style is his own. He favors psychological horror, and there are few elements of the supernatural to be found. Sociopaths and obsessives seem to be his stock in trade, with detailed exercises on how to commit the perfect, untraceable murder. Many of the stories end with some unexpected revelation, although I would not call it a "twist ending." The obsessive nature of the stories renders them all the more disturbing, as almost every story is something that could conceivably happen.

In addition to the excellent "The Chair," you will find "The Caterpillar" featuring a cruel wife's abuse of her de-limbed husband, "The Cliff," a back-and-forth story that will leave you wondering who is manipulating who, "The Hell of Mirrors," a man obsessed with optics and reflecting surfaces descent into insanity, "The Red Chamber," revealing the true nature of those who are attracted to stories of others deaths, "The Two Crippled Men," a story of a murderous sleepwalker who commits crimes without ever knowing it and "The Traveler with the Pasted Rag Picture," the only story with a supernatural twinge, showing brotherly devotion and love of the unreal.

Each story in "Japanese Tales of Mystery & Imagination" is well-selected, and James B. Harris does a fine job with the translation, maintaining the tension and original intention. The only real shame is that this is the only collection of Rampo's works that has been translated into English. After reading this you will long for more.

A wonderful collection of stories!

I am a huge Japanophile and a lover of dark tales of mystery and I found that this book is the best of both worlds. After reading these stories, I pulled out my dusty old collection of Poe stories and started reading them all over. The translations are excellent (despite a few questionable spellings) and the overall feel of the novel is very Poe-esque (undoubtedly because Edogawa Ranpo, himself, assisted the translator in the creation of this collection).
While a few reviewers have criticized Edogawa Ranpo for his stories lacking Poe's feel for the dark horror novel, one must know that Edogawa Ranpo is regarded as the father of the Japanese MYSTERY novel, not horror. So, for anyone hoping to get a good scare from this book, you will be let down.
But, with that said, the stories are wonderful and I, quite honestly, would have forgotten that the stories were set in Japan if not for character names. A beautiful collection of dark mysteries that would please fans of Poe's "The Purloined Letter" and "The Tell-Tale Heart," but not necessarily fans of "The Pit and the Pendulum."
I highly recommend this book to fans of Japanese literature, those who like the "Kindaichi Case Files" (Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo) and fans of a good mystery.

Weird Fiction that deserves recognition

First let me say that I picked this volume up with low expectations and now I must say that I'm deeply impressed.Here is a writer whose vision is entirely his own, his style succint and easy to understand.
Although frequently labelled as a mystery writer, Rampo`s short stories are best viewed as weird fiction with pulp mystery flavour.
All stories are worth reading but THE HUMAN CHAIR is an undisputed masterpiece and in my humble opinion one of the best weird short stories ever written
Edogawa Rampo is an original and deserves recognition and a larger audience.
